The architectural firm of Mark Horton, MH/A contracted us to build a residence for a client in the El Cerrito hills.

The project was architecturally driven, designed to the smallest detail and features a sophisticated and unique modern appearance.

Project highlights included metal balconies with steel cable rails, large window assemblies to take advantage of the stunning views, metal roofing with metal clad eaves, and an open generous interior.

The owner and the architects collaborated successfully in selecting finishes that achieved a modern look without sacrificing comfort or cozy appeal.

The project was completed on schedule and took a year to complete.

We had done work for the architectural firm of Slant Studio before, they called me to submit a bid for this kitchen remodel.

The owner (also German) and I hit it off from the start, decision making was easy, construction went smoothly and the end result was this functional modern kitchen featuring custom made horizontally oriented bamboo grain doors, stainless appliances, colored solid surface countertops and high efficiency cabinet interiors to maximize the usage of the limited space available.

On time and on budget, this is one of the many projects we are proud of.

Johnson Residence - renovations in Oakland

In this rare post modern house project, we were able to get creative with metal and glass. The architectural firm Slant Studio provided the design in cooperation with the owners. We loved working with the different materials to create a very individual and modern space.

Some of the effects created by the designer were dazzling, for example the back lit opaque sliding glass closet door in the master bedroom and the neon-lit toe-space for the vanity. The bathroom renovations were also a success. The sliding patio door, which when opened reveals a twelve foot wide access to the yard was spectacular!

This project started out as a "kitchen remodel" but we ended up rebuilding the entire house and adding another story to it with a master suite and an office.

Somewhat unusual was the "design as you go" approach, but borrowing from his Scandinavian roots, Roar came up with some terrific ideas which added significant splendor and atmosphere to the house, transforming his 1940's era bungalow into the most beautiful home in the neighborhood.

56th Street Project - Oakland Craftsman renovation

Oakland craftsman

It took a lot of tender loving care to get this 1909 craftsman style home back to its original state. Of course we added lots of modern features such as a modern kitchen with stainless appliances, stacked washer and dryer, on demand hot water, and much more. However, we took pains to preserve the gorgeous trim and paneling which gives this house its distinctive character.

The fact that the previous owners had done little remodeling made the renovation somewhat easier because the original features still existed. Because we rebuilt all of the home's systems, this project was a challenging yet very satisfying accomplishment.
